Home Programs SeniorCorps Description
Since the 1960s many Americans over the age of 55 have volunteered with the three Senior Corps programs: Foster Grandparent Program, Senior Companion Program, and Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). The experiences and skills of the volunteers help provide valuable services to their communities. They serve in their communities as mentors, companions, coaches, working with different organizations and on different service projects. Some volunteers receive a small stipend for their work.
Foster Grandparent Program
Volunteers mentor children and youth with exceptional needs by offering emotional support, guidance, and skill knowledge. Often volunteers work with troubled youth, caring for young children, and working with children with disabilities.
Senior Companion Program
Senior Companions help other adults in their community who are homebound and may be living alone. Volunteers spend their time assisting with some of the daily tasks in the homes of others as well as become a friendly companion for other adults.
Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP)
This program connects older adults with service opportunities around their community. By taking into consideration their skills and experience, volunteers are matched to sites where they perform such tasks as tutoring, helping in hospitals, serving as citizen patrols, mentoring, and working with the environment.
