The Communities in Schools program focuses on the Five Basics for students: one-on-one relationships with caring adults, a safe place to learn and grow, a marketable skill to use upon graduation, a healthy start and healthy future, and opportunities to give back to peers and community. AmeriCorps members serve at four schools buildings in Wichita and at one high school in Wellington. AmeriCorps members help connect students to volunteer mentors and tutors, facilitate community and service learning opportunities for students, coordinate youth development and leadership opportunities, and support academic progress through a variety of settings including after school programs.
Inter-Faith Ministries
The GoZones! program is a collaborative effort by congregations, schools, social service providers, neighborhood organizations, and community policing throughout the city of Wichita. Every GoZones! site is located in a partnering congregation and shares common program goals: 1) to provide safe places during non-school hours to youth in targeted neighborhoods; 2) to support families 3) to train and empower AmeriCorps members with youth and family focused skills, a sense of national identity, accomplishment and pride; and 4) to strengthen the community by bringing neighbors together to positively affect youth, families and improve the sense of community in neighborhoods. Performance goals are focused on developing self-sustaining GoZones! sites on a 3-year schedule, with output goals related to the number of people served in after-school, recreational and adult education programs.

Kansas Campus Compact (KsCC) implements a statewide youth leadership program that engages college students in a leadership/mentorship role with community-based youth service groups. Members are placed in Campus Compact affiliate colleges or universities and linked to established programs in area communities such as 4-H, Kansas PRIDE, or other community-based youth service programs. AmeriCorps members coordinate with a local program leader to meet regularly with the youth groups to provide team-building, leadership skill development and to assist in identifying, planning, and implementing community-wide service projects. The service projects empower youth, engage others, and meet a real community need. In addition to the measured increase in knowledge, skills attitude and behaviors of members and youth participants, satisfaction of the campus and community partners are reflected in evaluative focus group sessions.

The Kansas Outdoor AmeriCorps Action Team focuses on two service activities: environmental restoration and also provides disaster responses when needed. Members continually serve in an environmental capacity with a resource in need of attention and local support – state parks, local communities, and other KDWP-managed areas. Members provide environmental restoration and education programs. Outcomes include completion of environmental projects to restore, enhance, develop and mitigate the loss of environmental resources. Environmental education outcomes consist of nature-based educational programs to local youth groups, schools and civic groups to help inform and educate individuals on how they can help preserve and enjoy the great outdoors. Disaster response effort includes continuing service at Greensburg.
